By Dean Poulton, native British English teacher (Oxford). I prepare candidates 1-on-1 for Cambridge exams, online worldwide.

A Cambridge certificate is a permanent, internationally recognised proof of your English, accepted by universities and employers across Europe and beyond. But the exams reward preparation as much as ability: candidates with genuinely good English regularly lose marks to exam technique, to a Writing paper that does not answer the task, or to a Speaking paper they have never rehearsed. That is exactly what coaching fixes.

Which Cambridge exam should you take?

Take the one that matches your current level rather than the most impressive-sounding. Sitting an exam a level above you is the most common and most expensive mistake.

ExamLevelCambridge ScalePass (Grade C)Who it suits
B2 First
(FCE)
CEFR B2140 to 190160+Confident upper-intermediate English for work, study and daily life
C1 Advanced
(CAE)
CEFR C1160 to 210180+University entry and international professional roles, the most requested of the three
C2 Proficiency
(CPE)
CEFR C2180 to 230200+Near-native mastery, academic and specialist work

A Grade A shows you performed at the level above, so a strong B2 First can certify C1, and a strong C1 Advanced can certify C2.

How the exam is actually scored

This surprises most candidates. There are four papers, but Cambridge reports five separate scores: Reading, Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Your overall result is the average, so each one carries roughly 20%. That matters for preparation, because it means a weak Writing or Speaking paper cannot be hidden behind strong reading, and it means the fastest way to lift a score is usually to fix your weakest single skill rather than to revise everything evenly.

Where we focus

Writing, marked properly

Your essays, reports, reviews and proposals marked against the Cambridge assessment criteria, with specific corrections and a clear rewrite plan.

Speaking, rehearsed

Realistic practice for every part of the Speaking paper, including the collaborative task candidates find hardest, with honest feedback on fluency and range.

Use of English

The part that most reliably separates grades. Targeted work on word formation, key word transformations and collocation.

Mock papers

Full papers under exam timing, so the real thing holds no surprises and you know your pacing before you sit it.

Why Cambridge rather than IELTS

Both are respected, and the right choice depends on who is asking for it. The practical difference is permanence: Cambridge qualifications do not expire, while institutions usually accept an IELTS result only from the past two years. If you want a certificate once, that you will still be able to use in five years, Cambridge is the better buy. If a specific university or immigration authority has asked for IELTS, take IELTS. We also do IELTS preparation, so the advice you get here is not steering you toward one exam for the sake of it.

"I have regained confidence since the first session. Well-structured, adapts to the individual. I can only recommend!"Rémi, confidence

How the coaching works

Sessions are 50 minutes, 1-on-1, online over Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp, so you can prepare from anywhere. Every session is planned around your weakest paper, and you get practice materials between lessons. We start with a free 20-minute consultation to establish your current level, confirm which exam you should sit, and map out a realistic timeline to the exam date.

Common questions

Should I take B2 First or C1 Advanced?

Whichever matches your level now. B2 First suits confident upper-intermediate English; C1 Advanced suits someone already fluent who needs precision and control under pressure, and it is what most universities ask for. We settle this in the free consultation.

Do Cambridge certificates expire?

No. They are valid for life, unlike IELTS, where results older than two years are usually not accepted.

How long will I need?

Around 8 to 12 weeks of focused work if you are already close to the level. Longer if you are a full level below, because then we are raising your English, not just your exam technique.

What if I fail?

You can resit, and your preparation is not wasted. More usefully, we aim not to enter you for an exam you are not ready for. Honest level assessment at the start is part of the service.

How much does it cost?

Sessions are from €50, including homework and progress tracking. See the pricing page. The first 20-minute consultation is free.
